Course outcomes
- Apply fundamental principles of English grammar, vocabulary, and sentence construction in academic communication.
- Develop effective writing skills through paragraph writing, summarization, paraphrasing, and précis writing.
- Prepare formal written communication such as letters, notices, memoranda, meeting documents, and e-mails.
- Demonstrate reading comprehension and critical appreciation of written and spoken texts

Parts of speech and their usage, Sentence structure, Types of sentences, Transformation of sentences, Subject–verb agreement, Articles and determiners, Prepositions, Tenses and their applications, Active and passive voice, Direct and indirect speech. Vocabulary development: Word formation, Synonyms development: formation, Synonyms and antonyms, Prefixes and suffixes, Commonly confused words, Technical vocabulary, Common errors in English usage.,
Unit II
Principles of effective writing, Types of writing, Paragraph structure and development, Topic sentences and supporting ideas, Coherence and cohesion. Paraphrasing techniques, Summarizing skills, Précis writing, Editing and proofreading, Avoiding ambiguity and redundancy, Developing clarity and precision in writing.
Unit III
Principles of formal communication, Professional writing conventions. Meetings: Agenda preparation, Minutes of meetings. Business and professional correspondence: Formal letters Applications Notices Memoranda Press releases E-mails Introduction to technical communication, Writing for academic and professional contexts.
Unit IV
Reading strategies: Skimming, scanning, intensive and extensive reading, Identifying main ideas and supporting details, Inference and interpretation.
